Student Story – Rural and Remote Nursing
03 Nov 2025
Heather Smith
Qualification Graduate Certificate in Nursing Rural and Remote at Charles Sturt University.
Why did you choose your degree and what do you enjoy the most about it?
I chose Rural and Remote Nursing because I enjoy the country, live in Mansfield and would like to contribute to the local health system. I can not see myself moving anytime soon. The Mansfield community is such a welcoming and warm community to be apart of and the Mansfield District Hospital, where I work, is such a key and important part of the community.
What has been your education journey so far?
I am from Canada and when I was younger I started working as a ski patroller on a local mountain. This triggered my interest in health so I enrolled in my Bachelor of Nursing. When I moved to Australia I developed a great love of the Australian countryside and outdoors. This resulted in me choosing to further my studies by enrolling in Rural and Remote nursing through Charles Sturt University. I have love the course but I am so glad I have finished. I need a break.
How important is having the CUC in your local town to you and why?
Having a CUC in my local town is incredibly important to me, I honestly don’t know what I would do without it. It provides a welcoming and quiet study environment away from home, which makes a huge difference to my focus and motivation. I use the sound booth occasionally to listen and respond to some of my lectures which is so convenient. I’m not sure if I would have finished my studies if I could not access this facility. The fast internet is a blessing and free access to printing has made it so easy.
